Singapore Visit Program (SVP)

Under the support of Veritas College and Shantou University, Associate Professor Dennis Lee organized and led the delegation of 22 students to visit and learn about Singapore for nine days, between Aug.18th, 2018 and Aug.26th, 2018. The students came from four different universities--16 from Shantou University(STU), 2 from Nanjing Audit University (NAU), 2 from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) and 2 from Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) in China. This program provided our students the opportunity to interact with different people, understand the public and private sectors of Singapore as well as develop an international perspective to know the world better.

Conversation with Professors

We went to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) where we had a meaningful conversation with Mr. Jeremy Yap, Deputy Chief Executive on the fourth day. From him we learned that the purpose of the traffic system in Singapore is to make their citizens live better and travel more conveniently. Then the dialogue sessions with Mr. Keith Leong of Singtel Group (NCS) helped us learn more knowledge about global sales and customer groups. Our interaction session with Business China Youth Chapter (BCYC) members and students from Republic Polytechnic enabled us to discuss how youths from both countries and collaborate for a better future together.

In addition, we also had a conversation with Dr Tan Lai Yong, Resident Fellow, Alice & Peter Tan College in National University of Singapore (NUS) the next day. He wrote a book about his experience in teaching medical skills and treating patients in the backward areas of Yunnan, China. His 13-year selfless dedication inspired us a lot.

Cultural experience

On the first day of our visit Singapore, we went to NeWater Centre to learn out how Singaporeans use hydro technology to recycle their limited water resources. After that, we visited Chinatown, the historical site of Chinese migrants to experience Chinese's lifestyle in Singapore in the evening. On the fifth day, we came to Botanical Garden and Orchid Garden, enjoying beautiful plants, around 700 kinds of blooming orchids and the marvelous scenery that nature gave us. We visited the Merlion Park, Victorian Memorial Hall and the Supreme Court that saw our happy and satisfying faces in the afternoon of day 6.  The long-awaited Captain’s Ball game led by Dennis brought us closer and made SVP warmer.

Singaporean lifestyle experience

We went to Hort Park and made our way to Mt Faber through the Henderson Wave Bridge. The bridge is made of wooden planks in order to protect the local ecological environment. We encouraged and helped each other, making our friendships closer. In the afternoon, we went to Jurong East Swimming Complex to appreciate Public Housing Neighborhood Facilities. The boys took their initiative to help girls who cannot swim, showing their gentlemanliness. Going to Dennis's home was the most exciting part of this day. The warm of the house and hospitality from Dennis and his wife seemed to make our fatigue disappear.

At the last day, we visited the National Stadium facilities and learn about the emphasis to promote healthy lifestyle by the Singapore Sports Council. After that, the picnic and BBQ at East Coast Park drew a perfect mark of the end of our SVP.

Ending is another beginning. We hugged and wished each other well. Thanks to everyone we met and look forward to meeting them again.
